Dr. Alexander is a Professor at the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing. He leads pioneering IT evaluations benchmarking IT effects on quality of care in nursing homes and other long term care settings. Specifically, he is producing the first report linking nationally reported nursing home quality measures with health information technology capabilities, extent of use, and degree of IT integration funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Also, he is co-leading large Centers for Medicare and Medicaid demonstration project which is implementing interventions to reduce avoidable hospitalizations in nursing homes. Dr. Alexander is specifically working with secure bidirectional health information exchanges and building stakeholder networks between long term care nursing homes and acute care organizations who are interested in improving quality of care for long term care residents. His leadership has informed standards development organizations and health policy about nursing practice and informatics initiatives that impacts geriatric providers and patients nationwide and internationally. His research is widely produced, recognized, and disseminated in national and international journal publications, conference proceedings, and book chapters.
